SEO, Meta Tags & Microdata

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the quality and quantity of website traffic by increasing the visibility of its web pages in search engines. The higher the site’s position in the search results, the greater the likelihood that a visitor will go to it.

Important elements of search engine optimization and online store promotion are Meta tags and Microdata used in HTML documents.

Meta Tags

Meta tags - designed to provide structured metadata about a web page. They are part of the web page header. Meta elements can be used to describe the page, keywords, and any other metadata.

1. Tag "title".
2. Tag "description".

Tag "title"

The title tag in the search engine appears as the title of the search results. The title, in JKassa, is automatically generated from the product name if it is not specified in the "Product Title" field when creating or editing product data.

1. Product name.
2.Title product.

Additional meta elements can be specified there on the Publish Settings tab.

2. Keywords meta tag.
3. Robots meta tag.
4. Rights meta tag.

Description meta tag

The description attribute is a short description of the contents of a web page. This allows the authors to give a more accurate description than would be displayed if the search engine created their own, based on the content of the page. The description is often, but not always, displayed on the search results pages, which can affect the clickthrough rate.

Although Google does not recognize this meta element as a ranking factor, therefore, the use of targeted keywords in this element will not help the site increase its ranking.

W3C does not indicate the size of the description of this meta tag, but almost all search engines recommend that it not exceed 155 characters of plain text.

Keywords meta tag

There is no consensus on whether a keyword attribute affects ranking in any of the major search engines. This is supposed to happen if the keywords used in the keywords meta tag can also be found on the page itself. Since 2009, Google no longer takes keywords into account.

Robots meta tag

The "robots" attribute, supported by several major search engines, determines whether search engine spiders can index the page or not, and whether they should follow the links from this page. An attribute can contain one or more values, separated by commas. A value of "noindex" prevents page indexing, and "nofollow" prevents link crawls.

Rights meta tag

This attribute displays the copyright for the publication of this material.

Display meta tags in web page code.

Note. The default values for meta tags can be specified in the general Joomla settings on the "Site" tab, in the "Metadata Settings" section. But if you do not specify meta tags for each product, this will lead to duplication on every page of your site, which is extremely undesirable.

Microdata "Schema.org"

Schema.org is a standard for semantic markup (micro-markup) in HTML5, which helps search engines understand the information (content) published on the site. Micro-markup improves the appearance of snippets (a small information block) of your site in the search engine results.

In JKassa, “Schema.org” micro-markup can be enabled for product list pages and single product pages: JKASSA Configuration -> Integration -> Structured Data.

To check structured data on your website, use the online tool from Google - Check structured data.

Microdata "Protocol Open Graph"

Let people quickly and easily post content from your website to Facebook. When people share your materials, in their publication, in addition to the basic information, there is a link to your site. To mark up the HTML code of your website, you should use the Open Graph tags, which are responsible for how your materials will be displayed on Facebook. If there are no such tags, the Facebook crawler will try to independently find the title, description and image for publication.

Note. Now the Open Graph protocol is used in addition to Facebook on Twitter, Google+, VKontakte, Odnoklassniki, Pinterest, etc.

In JKassa, “Schema.org” micro-markup can be enabled for product list pages and single product pages: JKASSA Configuration -> Integration -> Structured Data.

To see how your markup is displayed for the Facebook crawler, enter the URL into the post debugger. You will see meta tags scraped by the crawler, as well as errors and warnings.
